Il a enseign\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#8217;Universit\u00e9 de Caire, \u00e0 Amman et \u00e0 Damas. Ferrin poursuit l\u2019\u00e9cole de pens\u00e9e inspir\u00e9 par les historiens Am\u00e9rico Castro et Ignacio Olag\u00fce. En ce qui concerne la gen\u00e8se de l&#8217;Islam il est enti\u00e8rement d&#8217;accord avec la th\u00e8se de l\u2019arabisant allemand G\u00fcnter L\u00fcling. Il utilise la chronologie conventionnelle comme un cadre g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, mais remet en question le d\u00e9veloppement de l&#8217;histoire telle qu&#8217;elle est enseign\u00e9e.
