Critical chronology means the study of our history from a point of view that critically questions, analyzes, and scrutinizes data, documents, and traditions. This often overturns traditional views, especially the chronological classification of many historical events prior to the Renaissance. The historical framework we use to organize the succession of our cultures —Greeks, Romans, Christianity, Middle Ages…— is based on an agreement that we believe was worked out in the 15th and 16th centuries. It has little in common with genuine data, and was elaborated mainly according to the interests of particular forces that wanted to create a history which would serve their purposes.
